Ales Bialiatski Elected Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) 16:25, 25/04/2007
On April 24th, human rights defender Ales Bialiatski was elected Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). FIDH is one of the most influential world human rights organizations. The central office of FIDH is based in Paris. FIDH has a status of an observer in the United Nations, and has a possibility to speak at the sessions of UN bodies.
Last year Ales Bialiatski was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. In 2006 he received a Sakharov Prize in Norway and a Homo Homini Award in the Czech Republic.
This week FIDH, which unites human rights organizations from about 140 countries of the world, is having a congress. Yesterday the congress elected Ales Bialiatski Vice President, which is a great honor for all Belarusians.
The Human Rights Center Viasna led by Ales Bialiatski became a FIDH member in 2004.
