Belarusian Helsinki Committee considers militia actions as unprofessional and provocative 18:19, 27/04/2007
The Belarusian Helsinki Committee declared that 26 April during the peaceful demonstration ”Chernobyl Way” in commemoration of consequences of the Chernobyl disaster the militia interfered with the march and endangered the safety of the participants, pushing the demonstrators to those parts of the street, which were under the repair.
After the mourning meeting at the Chernobyl chapel the demonstrators started dispersing but the special militia regiments initiated unreasonably cruel detaining of the participants: several dozens of people were detained, others were beaten up, the right defenders remarked.
The Belarusian Helsinki Committee considers militia actions as unprofessional and provocative. Violation of freedom of expression and peaceful meetings, arrests and beating –up of demonstrators may lead to a greater isolation of the Republic of Belarus and strengthening of political and economic sanctions.
