Mahilyou: Chernobyl victims remembered at two meetings 17:35, 27/04/2007
On April 26 two meetings have taken place in Mahilyou, official and oppositional ones. Both of them were held in the outskirts of the city. The official one was held on the territory of the radiation medicine hospital, and the oppositional one near the largest city cemetery. Nothing reminded if the date of Chernobyl catastrophe in Mahilyou. Even flags with black ribbons were not set up, Radio Svaboda informs.
Mostly schoolchildren have gathered for the official meeting. Representatives of the united oppositional forces have come and laid flowers to a memorial sign.
The chairman of Mahilyou city executive committee Viktar Shorykau delivered a speech. He compared the aftermaths of Chernobyl tragedy to the consequences of the World War II.
The alternative meeting organized by the united opposition, gathered about four dozens of activists.
A Roman Catholic priest of St. Stanislau church in Mahilyou, Fr. Raman held a prayer service for Belarus. The meeting ended with the hymn “Oh, Mighty God” and attaching black ribbons with “Radiation” signs to the Cross of remembrance of Chernobyl victims.
