Supreme Court asked for Materials of Kazulin’s Criminal Case 18:26, 03/05/2007
The Supreme Court asked the Moscovsky district court of Minsk for materials of the criminal case of former candidate to the presidency Alyaksandr Kazulin, leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Gramada), serving his sentence in prison. That was reported by former lawyer of A. Kazulin Igar Rinkevich.
According to him, the Supreme Court was to answer the claims of Kazulin’s lawyers Igar Rinkevich and Zmitser Garyachka on cancellation of their law client’s sentence on 2 May. “The claims came to the Supreme Court 2 April. Yesterday the term elapsed over which the answer had to be given. However, the Supreme Court informed us that the materials of Kazulin’s criminal case had been asked for on 18 April. Thus the answer to the claim we may get only on 18May”, Igar Rinkevich explained.
According to him,”the Supreme Court still has a chance for manifesting that the Belarusian judicial system is independent and fair. We continue considering Kazulin not guilty and demand his sentence cancellation for absence of corpus delicti in his actions”, Igar Rinkevich declared. The former Candidate President was sentenced for 5.5 years in prison for organization of the peaceful protest demonstration 25 March 2006.
It has become known today that 27 April 2007 lawyer Aleg Vouchak and the policymaker’s daughter Yulia Kazulina got the answer from the Minsk public prosecutor’s office to their claim on the fact of Kazulin’s being beaten 2 March 2006. The public prosecutor’s office didn’t consider the claim and the proofs enclosed to it because it didn’t regard Yu. Kazulin and A. Vouchak as participants of the criminal case thus having no right to act on his behalf and for his defense.
It is to be mentioned that the incident took place 2 March last year. The Candidate President of Belarus A. Kazulin arrived to the palace of railway workers in Minsk for registration as a participant of the Third All-Belarusian People’s Meeting, which was to open in the capital that day. The policymaker failed to register because he and his official persons were attacked by unknown persons .As Kazulin’s supporters managed to find out afterwards, those were the “Almaz” special militia regiment warriors.
