Germany supporting ILO standpoint regarding Belarus
12:49, 17/05/2007

The MFA of Germany reported that the country supported the proposals of the International Labor Organization (ILO) regarding Belarus, thus, it would not object expelling of Belarus from the General System of preferences. Meanwhile, Germany is for partnership cooperation with Belarus on the basis of ”acknowledgement of the major European values”.

“We have no intensions of turning Belarus out of dynamically developing processes .The European Union is principally interested in close partnership cooperation with Belarus. Belarus is closer to the European Union than, for example, the countries of Central Asia, both geographically and historically. But closer cooperation within the framework of the European policy is based on acknowledgement of the major European values”, adviser on Belarus of the MFA of the FRG Peter Zonnehol declared in his interview with he Belarusian service of the Deutsche Welle.

Among the European values the German diplomat sees the democratic constitution, fair and honest electoral system, freedom of oppositional activities, freedom of press and freedom of trade unions’ activities.

Previously head of division on cooperation with the C.I.S. countries of the Federal Ministry of Economy and Technologies Peter Lorents declared in Minsk that Germany was interested in successful settlement of the collision between Belarus and the ILO.

“All of us are interested that the talks should be successfully completed and Belarus should not be deprived of those preferences”, head of the German delegation in Minsk declared.
