Day of Solidarity in Mahilyou, Salihorsk, Polatsk and Asipovichy (Photo) 13:23, 17/05/2007
A group of public activists with portraits of abducted and imprisoned politicians marched along central streets of Mahilyou. For the first time activists managed to walk together without close observation of policemen.
This time activists were stopped by surprised passer-by from time to time and asked about the goal of the march which was inexplicable for them. Participants of the protest told about the abducted and imprisoned politicians in detail, and about regime’s crackdown on opposition activists, Radio Svaboda informs.
In Asipovichy activists placed a white-red-white flag of the mobile communication antenna tower. The flag stayed there until the evening, and then was removed by a fire brigade.
The Day of Solidarity was also celebrated in Polatsk. On May 16 in the evening local activists of the Young Front staged a picket near the monument of St. Euphrosinia of Polatsk.
Several dozens of picketers were holding lit candles and portraits of abducted politicians. Two policemen came to the monument soon. They checked documents of a few protesters and asked about the goals of the picket. This time nobody was detained, Radio Svaboda informs.
On May 16 at 8 p.m. people came to the central square of Salihorsk as usual to mark the Day of Solidarity. They were holding portraits of political prisoners and abducted politicians. This time Salihorsk dwellers had additional motive to gather. A criminal action under Article 193 of the Criminal Code (activities on behalf of an unregistered organization) has been opened against the leader of the Salihorsk branch of the Young Front, Ivan Shyla.
