General Conference of Trade Unions (GCTU) which combines 31 branch international organizations as well as professional centers of 10 C.I.S. countries, among them being Federation of Trade unions of Belarus (FTUB), expressed its hope that the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus would turn to the government of Belarus its insistent demand to fulfill immediately and in full volume the recommendations of the Commission of the International Labor Organization, reports www.praca-by.info.

“A possibility that pre-regime trade unions would be able to put off annulment of trade benefits of the EU is very law. European structures do not give in to any external political pressure, they judge by actions and results. And they are absent. Belarusian state had been given time for correction, but it hadn’t taken the opportunity. Belarus ahs fulfilled only 2 recommendations out of 12 recommendations of the ILO,” told the leader of the Belarusian Radio and Electronics Workers’ Union (REWU) Henadz Fyadynich.

Charges were laid against former head of the “ Belneftekhim” concern Alyaksandr Barousky. That was reported to the BelTA at the Committee of State Security of Belarus (KGB). It was said that he was charged of corruption. The case is to be investigated by the KGB investigators.

At Garodnya University after Yanka Kupala the round table dedicated to a disputable reconstruction of historical buildings of the city was conducted but the local researchers of the region historian Andrei Vashkevich and journalist Ales Zaleusky were not allowed to attend the action. A well-known human rights activist Valery Shchukin has been sentenced to a fine of 40 basic units (1,240,000 rubles) by a court of Pershamajski district of Vitsebsk. Besides, Valery Shchukin is to pay 250,000 rubles of moral damages for a member of the regional election commission Tatsyana Buevich allegedly insulted by him.

Decision on Belarus’ deprivation of European Union’s preferences to be made today 14:26, 08/06/2007

8 June in Brussels and Geneva the talks of the Belarusian authorities with the European Union and International Labor Organization for retaining of trade preferences are to be held. In Geneva at the International Labor Conference sitting the situation with the independent trade unions in Belarus will be considered. Violation of their rights and the rights of working people caused rising of the issue of excluding our country from the general system of preferences. This decision is to come into effect on 21 June. The forthcoming decision has made the Belarusian authorities facilitate the talks fro preventing the negative development of events. The value of the issue amounts to annual EUR 300 million.

Young activists Henadz Sharakh, Zmitser Lisiyonak, Ales Dzeravyanka and Andrej Danileuski have been detained on June 6 near the building of Pershamajski district of Vitsebsk. They came to the court to support Valery Shchukin who is tried for a criminal offence, and are under investigation themselves. They were detained for holding an unsanctioned rally and insubordination to policemen.

Graffiti “Freedom to Valery Shchukin!”, “Old man, we are with you!”, “Shchukin! We love you!” have emerged these days in Vitsebsk, where a process over the human rights activist is taking place at the moment. The human rights activist is charged with insult of election commission members who had been engaged in rigging local election results. Every day people with his portraits are gathering near the court. The reaction of Vitsebsk police to actions of solidarity is very aggressive. For instance, on June 6 they battered even women and children. 5 activists were detained.

Prosecutor demanded to sentence Shuchukin to month of arrest 11:41, 08/06/2007

A public prosecutor has demanded a month of arrest and compensation of moral damages (BYR 500,000) as a punishment for a human rights activist Valery Shchukin. Besides, the prosecutor said that Shchukin is to pay 170,000 rubles of fine he allegedly failed to pay in 1999 for participation in Freedom March.

A slogan “Freedom to Shchukin!” had been written overnight on the building of internal affairs department of Vitsebsk. A young activist Zmitser Lisiyonak was detained for making the graffiti. The Charter’97 press-center has been informed about that by a former political prisoner, an oppositional leader Paval Sevyarynets. As said by him, a criminal action for “hooliganism” had been brought up against Lisiyonak. The verdict to Valery Shchukin is to be passed today, at 2 p.m.
