Garodnya’s authorities imitating dialogue
16:42, 08/06/2007

At Garodnya University after Yanka Kupala the round table dedicated to a disputable reconstruction of historical buildings of the city was conducted but the local researchers of the region historian Andrei Vashkevich and journalist Ales Zaleusky were not allowed to attend the action. The University authorities even called for the militia.

The militiamen detained youth activists Yaraslau Grischanka and Viktar Parnashou at the university when they were distributing the “Nasha Slova”(Our Speech) newspaper issue dedicated to the reconstruction of Garodnya. The youths had been kept at the militia department for two hours, the Radio Svaboda reports.

Doctor of history Krautsevich who was lucky to appear at the round table shared his impressions:

“The University authorities received the order from the higher authorities to imitate the dialogue with the public. The people who made the site on the Garodnya reconstruction, on the city protection were not allowed to attend the round table. The University authorities looked reluctant to conduct the round table because it was hard for them to manage the situation. Dean of the historic faculty Yarmusik was the master of ceremony. The discussion was open by deputy rector Nyachukhrin. , The regional ideologist was present accompanied by ideologist of the city executive council Dubavets. It was obvious that all the time they were afraid of losing the initiative. In the beginning they presented the target of the event: it was not aimed at the issues of the city reconstruction but at preventing the students and lecturers to appear at the opposite side of the barricade, to participate in the struggle for real reconstruction, at making them not submit to ”political provocations”! But in his speech he mentioned that we should be grateful and glad for having such youth".
