Russia Gives Belarus Ultimatum

Belarus is to cancel indebtedness of the first half of the year for Russian gas deliveries before the end of this year”, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov told a Monday news conference in Minsk. “Belarus should pay off the gas debt before the end of this year,” A. Surikov said. He reminded that in January-July Belarus pays 55% of the cost of gas delivered to Belarus. The parts have agreed on that in connection with a gas price hike for Belarus in 2007, from $46.7 per 1,000 cubic m to $100 çà 1,000 cubic m.

9 June political prisoner was allowed to spend less than two hours out of the commendant’s headquaters. Yesterday major Uladzimir Mikhailau allowed Artur to leave the guarded territory for an hour and half. Protesting against the arbitrary behavior of the authorities the political prisoner refused such like “ mercy”, the Radio Svaboda informs.

Militia beating minor girl-activist until her brain concussion

Minor Khristina Mikhailava was given a medical conclusion of the inflicted brain concussion. 6 June the girl with several other people was heavily beaten by the militiamen at the Pervamaisky district court of Vitebsk.

Young activist arrested for graffiti

A young activist Zmitser Liseenka was detained at bout 3 a.m. on Saturday near the administration of Kastrychnitski district of Vitsebsk for writing a slogan “Free Kazulin!” on a concrete fence. After drawing up a report the young man was sent to a remand prison. The trial was held in the afternoon, without a lawyer. Only policemen were witnesses.

Painters protest redevelopment of Hrodna`s historic part

A group of artists took part in an open-air painting session in Hrodna on June 10 to protest a project to redevelop the city`s historic part. At least 16 painters, including Ales Pushkin, Alyaksey Marachkin, Ales Shaternik, Mikhail Anempadystaw and Dzmitry Ivanowski, participated in the session to depict Hrodna`s Old Town and the buildings that the authorities plan to demolish.

Shalkevich and Bartosik to take part in “For Belarus!” concert

A concert “For Belarus!” is planned on June 23 in Homel. It is a day of Ivan Kupala (St. John`s Feast, Midsummer Night) in the old style calendar. Well-known Belarusian bards are to take part in the concert. The event is organized by Homel public association of regional ethnographers “Talaka”, and a regional organization of the Belarusian language society.

Lukashenka Met Only Yushchenko

In the framework of an informal CIS summit held in St. Petersburg (Russia), a meeting of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Viktar Yushchenko. As UNIAN agency informs with a reference to a press-secretary of Ukrainian president Irina Vannikova, Yushchenko “exchanges opinions” with Lukashenka “on the state of readiness to signing bilateral documents on border cooperation, and on cooperation in legal, consultative and energy spheres”. There have been no reports about a meeting of Lukashenka and Putin.
