Pavel Kazlousky: “In the situation of antimissile systems deployment Belarus should stick to neutrality” 14:32, 11/06/2007
Former minister of defense Pavel Kazlousky commented on outcomes of the last week’s G8 summit in Germany. “Putin’s proposal is certainly a very serious step, Pavel Kazlousky said in his interview with the “Tavarisch” newspaper. So, Belarus with its present leadership is left far beneath such level. Under no circumstances despite of all ”alliance-like” relations with Russia should our country make politics on this issue”.
It is to be mentioned that last Friday’s proposal of President of Russia Vladimir Putin to President of the USA George Bush on the joint exploitation of the Gabalin radiolocation station in Azerbaijan for prevention of the threat from certain Asian countries as an alternative to the American antimissile systems deployment in Europe appeared to become the real sensation. Putin declared that if the USA accepts Russia’s proposal than the Russian Federation will neither deploy its missiles in the Kaliningrad region nor move them closer to the western borders of the country.
Kazlousky is sure that the Russian missiles will not be deployed on the Belarusian territory.
“I consider that another “ cold war” is not to be unleashed. Especially after the summit, after the tough speech of Putin, declared the former minister of defence of Belarus. But our leaders should not speculate on the subject. As far as Poland is concerned, yes, the society there is certain that the American antimissile systems are the guarantee of Poland’s security. But Belarus should stay calm and reserved”.
Kazlousky expects a reasonable compromise from the USA in its relations with Russia.
Being a normal person I would not wish any further confrontation, he said. But the USA has to slow down, to start solving the problems less toughly. Certainly it is difficult and thankless to make forecasts, but to my mind, this G8 summit will give better results that the Caribbean crises of 1962”.
