European Union wants to preserve mandates of UN Special Rapporteurs on Belarus 12:26, 22/06/2007
“The European Union is satisfied with the fact that all topical mandates and most country mandates have been preserved. At the same time, the EU would like to retain mandates of Special Rapporteurs for Belarus and Cuba. Situation there has been causing concern for a long time,” the statement of the European Union reads.
The European Union also welcomes agreement by members of the Human Rights Council on institutional building for this UN human rights body, BelaPAN informs. “Over the last 12 months the EU has taken an active part in the process of negotiations and called upon reinforcement of the Council, which would make it a key body in the UN system of human rights protection,” the statement reads. “Though not all EU aims have been achieved, in order to reach a compromise the EU joined the final agreement”.
As we have informed, on June 12 during the discussion on the situation with human rights in Belarus presented by UN Special Rapporteur Adrian Severin, Germany on behalf of the EU advocated prolongation of his mandate.
