Monument to John Paul II to be put up near Minsk 14:03, 05/07/2007
A monument to Pope John Paul II is to appear in the town of Valozhyn, Minsk region. The BELTA agency informs about that with a reference to the Chief Specialist of culture department of Valozhyn regional executive committee Valyantsina Batsyan.
As said by her, the monument construction is taking place in the historical center of the town, near the walls of St. Joseph’s Church constructed in the end of the 17th century. A statue of 2 metres high shows the moment when the Pope blesses people. A solemn opening of the monument will take place on July 7 as a part of Days of Polish culture held in Minks region every year.
The monument to the Pope is put up on the initiative of Roman Catholics living in the region; and with the support of local authorities, Embassy and Consulate of Poland, representatives of Polish Sejm.
John Paul II occupied the Holy See for 27 years. He dies after a long disease in 2005.
