Passports checked at Yanka Kupala’s anniversary in Viazynka 14:11, 09/07/2007
Festivities dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Yanka Kupala, the classical poet of the Belarusian literature, took place in the village of Viazynka (Maladziechna district) - the home village of the poet. Despite the attempts of the police and KGB officers to hinder from holding the fest, leader of the movement “For Freedom!” Aliaksandar Milinkievich and his upholders honored the Belarusian poet.
A performance organized by the members of the movement was held near the monument for the Belarusian poet. More than 200 people with national symbols depicted on their clothes were singing Belarusian patriotic songs and reading poems. Band “Rekha” gave an acoustic concert.
Police and KGB officers were checking passports and examined personal belongings at the entrance to the memorial complex of Yanka Kupala. They were checking documents, sacks and bags of the visitors, interrogated on non-registered symbols, leaflets and transparencies.
