“Deputies” Address Belarusian Language
12:18, 10/07/2007

In the period between sessions deputies are to continue work on the new draft version of rules of Belarusian orthography. This document is to be discussed July 12 by the Standing commission on education, culture, science and scientific and technical progress of the “chamber of representatives” of the “national assembly” of Belarus.

The existing rules of Belarusian spelling and punctuation were issued in 1959 and haven’t been changed since tat time. The new redaction of the rules is to fix all changes in the language legally. For instance a number of words have disappeared together with notions they denoted.

Proposed changes are not conceptual. They include just some correcting. It is offered to exclude a great number of existing exceptions. It is planned to expand the principle of writing “a” in an unstressed position, to eliminate paragraphs which do not concern spelling, to update examples.
