Pickets in defense of Kazulin banned
11:40, 10/07/2007

Brest city executive committee denied granting an application of a regional organization of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) for holding a picket in support of Alyaksandr Kazulin.

As the BelaPAN was informed by the chairman of the organization Ihar Maslouski, the local authorities motivate the refusal by a law “On mass events in the Republic of Belarus” and a decision of the city executive committee “On defining a fixed place for holding mass events in Brest”. Recalling provisions of these documents, the party organization was denied a permission for picketing at the place the applicants asked (Social Democrats planned to hold a rally in a busy spot of the city in Savetskaya Street, near cinema Belarus).

As said by Ihar Maslouski, according to the decision of the city executive committee, the only place for holding mass rallies is a stadium “Lokomotiv”.

“It’s hard to attract attention of the public at the stadium fenced by a concrete railing and situated in the sector of private houses. We find holding a rally at that place senseless. As far as I know, several places are offered for such actions in other regional cities. We are set to address to Brest city executive committee with a proposal to increase their number in out city, and to make them in busy spots of the city,’ Ihar Maslouski said.

As we have informed, the picket of the regional organization of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Hramada) in support of A. Kazulin was planned for June 10. The application for holding the event was sent to Brest city executive committee on June 22. The rally was to attract attention of dwellers of the regional city to requirements of the world community, including the human rights organization “Amnesty International”. They demand to free from charges a former candidate for presidency Alyaksandr Kazulin, a leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment.
