Lukashou can be sentenced to two years conditionally 18:10, 10/07/2007
At today’s court trial a state prosecutor has demanded to sentence a public activist Kanstantsin Lukashou to two years of conditional term. The Charter’97 press-center has been informed about that by a human rights activist Valery Shchukin. The sentence is to be pronounced tomorrow at 10.30 a.m.
As we have informed, it is a re-consideration of the criminal case of Kanstantsin Lukashou. April 3 a college of Minsk city court reversed the ruling of the court of Leninski district in Lukashou’s case issued on February 20 after a complaint of a lawyer. Defense believes that there is no element of crime in Lukashou’s actions.
As we have informed, Lukashou was detained Decemer 19, 2006. He was charged of striking a policeman by car when taking his brother Vyachaslau Siuchyk from the surgery department of the Minsk third hospital. That day unidentified persons with policemen’s I.D.s made an attempt to detain Siuchyk after his discharge from the hospital for the supposed minor public disorder. But with his brother’s help the politician managed to escape.
20 February 2007 K. Lukashou was confirmed guilty of the crime in compliance with Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (violence against militiaman on duty). He was sentenced to two years on probation with a two-year suspension of the sentence. The court also made a judgment to charge Br 1 million from K. Lukashou in favor of the policeman, Anatol Sushchenya, for compensation of his moral and physical damage.
