Russia to locate missiles in Kaliningrad region 15:35, 10/07/2007
Middle distance missiles placement in the European part of Russia including Kaliningrad region is an effective asymmetrical reply to the unilateral actions of the USA on locating the elements of its anti-missile defense (AMD) system close to the Russian frontiers, deem Russian military experts.
“First of all, the plan concerns the missiles of operative-tactical purpose “Iskander-M” - missiles of battle short distance. These missiles can be useful to neutralize the US AMD planned to be set in Poland and Czech,” - said first vice prime minister of geopolitical issues Academy Konstantin Sivkov.
At the same time, the possible approach of the location of new Russian missiles to the third position district of the US AMD in Europe is not likely to impact the US plans on its construction.
“I am convinced that the US keeps on constructing a global AMD system, which touches Europe, too. The US’ main purpose is not in combating the alleged Iranian missile threat, but in providing the USA with unilateral advantage in the sphere of nuclear armaments and in insuring nuclear blackmail of Russia by 2012-2015,” - said K.Sivkov.
According to him, the only efficacious means to opposite the USA plans on launching global AMD system is “large-scale program of utilization of intercontinental ballistic missiles PC-24 as well as strategic sea-based missiles “Bulava-30”.”
Former commander-in-chief of the Russian Federation land forces General Nikolai Kormiltsev, in his turn, told Interfax-AVN that “the location of operative and tactical missile complexes “Iskander-M” in the European part of Russia would be an appropriate respond to the plans of the USA on launching the third position district of AMD in Poland and Czech.”
“The distance of shooting of “Iskander-M” is sufficient to combat a threat posed by the US AMD object located near the Russian frontiers,” - said General.
“In case Russia has to locate “Iskander-M” at its Western borders, this will be a pure respond to the hostile actions of the USA and its European partners,” - emphasized General.
