Pavel Yakubovich: “Belarus can be in EU in some time” 17:33, 11/07/2007
“There are people who still cannot say goodbye to the Soviet Union mentally. But for majority who live in a sovereign state for 15 years, it is not a problem. And the next generation won’t reason about that at all. Another thing is which configurations would be formed in the future, will it be a union or something else. Nobody excludes that Belarus could join the EU after a while,” told the editor-in-chief of the newspaper of the Presidential administration “Sovetskaya Belorussia – Belarus segodnya” (“Belarus today”) Pavel Yakubovich.
He said: “I do not really like some attributes of our ideology work, too straightforward posters in the streets, rude schemes of ideology work. Sometimes actions of propagandists of the authorities are simply dusting works of the 1970ies.
But it is not worth saying that everything in actions of the government is based on the Soviet experience. Recently I published an article that a burial place of Stalin repressions’ victims of 1937 had been found in Homel recently. Why should we conceal it? I do not understand that at all. Some top officials say at once, that this fact is against communism, and the communism is… We, today’s citizens of Belarus say that we want to take something positive from the Soviet epoch. It really existed then. But with repulsion we should throw inhuman practices of 1930ies, and partially 1920ies and 1940ies overboard. And only then we shall be able to find some understanding”.
