Rallies on October Square and near St. Joseph’s Church (Photo) 20:16, 16/07/2007

Dozens of people have gathered today at 6 p.m. on October Square in Minsk with portraits of political prisoners. People were forced out of the square by riot policemen in mufti, and protesters went to St. Joseph’s church. However, Minsk dwellers could stand there just for a short while. Riot policemen required people to disband.

Dozens of people who were forced out of Kastrychnitskaya (October) Square, came to St.Joseph’s church in Cyril and Methodius Street. People hold portraits of political prisoners and pray. Riot policemen are standing nearby.

Today, on the Day of Solidarity, several dozens of people have gathered on October Square in the center of Minsk. As the Charter’97 press-center reporter told, people managed to stay on the square for a few minutes only. As soon as participants of the rally took portraits of political prisoners, riot policemen in mufti approached them and demanded to disband. People were forced away from the square to Independence Avenue to the central Department Store.

The cross in commemoration of all perished by the totalitarian regimes of the XX century was erected at the entrance to Vaukavisk when coming from Slonim at the palace of the former Uniat church. Next to this place in the Stalin’s times the peaceful people were shot. The cross was blessed by the Uniat priest from Grodna.

“I do not know what to think. It’s hard to understand what my fault is and what problems they could have with me? I just write articles, and I hope they are rather good and honest. In fact it’s a savagery. I wasn’t going to Belarus, I was on my way to Moscow in a Russian carriage. I had a ticket to Moscow. Why have they holding me for the whole night in brutal conditions, threatened me? When I was denied entry to the country last year, it was explainable, presidential elections were forthcoming. And now Lukashenka states his desire to bring relations with Europe back to normal. Sunday, July 15 annual Captive Nations March was held in New York. Among its participants Belarusians were a largest group. More than 40 persons have taken part in the rally, mostly members of the Belarusian-American Association (BAZA) and the Association of Belarusian Youth in America. (ZBMA)

Representatives of the largest oppositional party in the parliament of the South African Republic, the Democratic Alliance (DA), are concerned over deepening of cooperation between their country and Belarus. As Radio Svaboda has informed today, the leader of the DA Tony Leon criticized the government of the Republic of South Africa. He called unacceptable rapprochement of Pretoria and Minsk “when the international community expresses sharp criticism of the Belarusian regime for the situation with human rights”, when the EU and the US “impose sanctions against the highest Belarusian officials”.

Belarusian KGB officers have announced that they had disclosed a network of Polish spies who allegedly acted on the territory of Belarus. Yesterday it was stated on air of Belarusian TV by a deputy chairman of the agency Viktar Veger. As said by him, five persons had been detained. They are former military men who allegedly collected intelligence information for Polish intelligence. As said by the KGB representative, the information mostly concerned condition of the united Air Defence System for Belarus and Russia.
