Belarusian Military Men won’t support Russia’s decision on CFE
17:11, 18/07/2007

Belarusian military do not think it reasonable to take “practical measures” in connection with suspending the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) by Russia, told Chief of General Staff of the armed forces of Belarus, Lieutenant-General Syarhei Hurulyou (Gurulev) Wednesday in Brest during a meeting of chiefs of general staffs of military forces of Belarus and Ukraine.

“The position of the Defense department is as following: we agree with Russia in the part where Russia makes a proactive step, but we do not find it reasonable to take practical measures, as this treaty mustn’t be brought out of balance, or moreover a situation caused when it wouldn’t work,” S. Hurulyou said.

According to him, Russia has “wait and see attitude which would motivate other states to change their position on CFE”.

“We are a party to the treaty, we have ratified it, and we understand definitely that the treaty is necessary, though in its present state it is absolutely different from the 1990 treaty,” S. Hurulyou added.
