18th century pavilion pulled down in historic center of Hrodna 12:31, 20/07/2007
A public activist Ales Zaleuski called pulling down a brick one-storey building of the 18th century in the historic center of Hrodna “another act of vandalism”.
In an interview to BelaPAN he told that demolition of this building in Gorki Street 2a started July 18. As said by him, two walls are left of a Baroque architecture monument built in 1794 and used as a horse stable of a bishop. “However, Hrodna Orthodox eparchy which is the owner of the building promised to the public that the building would be preserved. All the more so, that experts from Minsk who examined the house a few months ago told about perfect condition of its walls,” A. Zaleuski said. As said by him, the diocese plans to construct a church and a household outbuilding on the place of the pavilion,” the BelaPAN informs.
“Thus, officials who are submissively follow orders of higher authorities, once again have demonstrated their real attitude to historic and cultural legacy, and to the opinion of national and international community that protest against demolition of the historic center of Hrodna,” A. Zaleuski noted.
