Putin allowing Gazprom to use weapons
16:33, 01/08/2007

President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed the Federal Act of Russia “On introduction of amendments in the Federal Act”On delivery of products for federal state needs” and Article 12 of the Federal Law “On weapons “. As stipulated by the amended law, Russian strategic oil enterprises will acquire the right for creation of the armed security divisions.

The list of object that may be provided with armed security must be confirmed by the Federal Security Service and the interior ministry. The mentioned objects’ security may carry, keep and use weapons in compliance with the law on department security.
The Russian Parliament deputies used the necessity of providing a more effective security for gas pipelines of the Transneft and Gazprom under conditions of the existing terroristic threat and eliminating of the unauthorized admission to the top security objects as an argument for the bill adoption.
Moreover many Russian parliamentarians have already expressed their criticism of the bill. The document critics consider that the department security being established at the Transneft and Gazprom will result “in creation of many department armies in the country”.
“Corporations armament is a considerably dangerous thing and under the Russian conditions it may mean even higher threat to the public”, remarked head of the Ethno-political and Regional Research Center Emil Pain.
