Stanislau Shushkevich nominated for Peace Nobel Prize
18:14, 24/08/2007

Stanislau Shushkevich former chairman of the Supreme Council was nominated for Peace Nobel Prize. The nomination was initiated by the former Polish President, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa .The Walesa’s initiative was advocated by several heads of states, former general secretaries, presidents, prime ministers, university professors.

“For me the situation development seemed quick and unexpected, the former chairman of the Supreme Council reported to the Nasha Niva. Last year I was lecturing in the Poznan Higher Political School which is under the auspices of the former Polish President, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa. Once I dropped into the school chancellor’s room when he was talking with Walesa on the phone .Lech asked me to the phone and invited me to visit him in Gdansk. I was released from lectures and took my way to him in Gdansk. We met in his office in a remarkable 2 hundred-year-old building. Almost at once Walesa informed me about my nomination for the Peace Nobel Prize of 2007.Francly speaking, it was a total surprise to me because he didn’t say anything about that on the phone. Walesa is entitled to make nominations for Nobel Prize as he himself is Peace Nobel Prize winner of 1983. He asked me to write my C.V. and then sent an application to the Norwegian Nobel Prize committee. I do not want to name my other nominators, yet. I will only admit that among them are heads of states, former general secretaries, presidents, prime ministers, university professors”.

Stanislau Shushkevich was nominated on the following items:

1. Initiation and realization of tactical and strategic atomic weapons removal from the territory of Belarus;

2 .Initiation of the December 1991 meeting of the heads of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, who signed the Belaya Vezha treaty which factually adopted the collapse of the USSR.

3. Active contribution to the peaceful collapse of the Russian colonial empire which existed in the form of the Soviet Union;

4. Contribution to the non-conflict transformation of the USSR into independent republics;

5. Loyalty to principles of peace and democracy, human rights and propaganda of those principles;

Annually 200 applicants are nominated for this prize. Among this year outstanding nominees are former vice-president of the USA Albert Gore for his activities for environmental protection, Marty Ahtisaari the peacemaker in Namibia, Achekhu and Kosovo, Chechen lawyer Lidia Usupova.

Among the last year Nobel Prize nominees was the member of the human rights organization “Vyasna” Ales Byalyatsky.
