In Lvov the Ploscha documentary by the Belarusian film director Yuri Khaschevatsky became a prize winner. Alyaksandr Milinkevich, leader of the Movement for Freedom, has welcomed the nomination of Stanislaw Shushkevich, Belarus` formal head of state between 1991 and 1994, for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, BelaPAN reported. Mr. Milinkevich, the winner of the European Parliament`s 2006 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, has called on the heads of state and government, as well as other influential people to second the nomination of the "first president of Belarus," the former presidential candidate`s press office said.
Several civil society activists were grabbed by police during their meeting with the pastor of an outlawed Protestant church in Homyel on August 26. Ernest Sabila, pastor of the Belarusian Evangelic Church, had come to the city in southeastern Belarus to meet with members of the Francisak Skaryna Belarusian Language Society. Held at the city`s office of the United Civic Party, the meeting was attended by some 20 people.
The Lithuanian rock festival Be2gether was held recently right at the border with Belarus. At the foot of the medieval castle in Norvelishkes the tent- camp was set up .Around 10000 people had come to Lithuania for the rock festival. That was the first event of the kind: 60 teams from Europe and the USA participated in the concerts. The festival’s motto was “Music Opening Boarders!” It was aimed at settling good neighborhood relationship of Belarus and the European Union.
