Defense Ministry ready to fulfill order 16:25, 29/08/2007
Defense Ministry of Belarus didn’t comment on the statements of the Russian ambassador Alexander Surikov on a might-be deployment of Russia’s nuclear weapons in Belarus. ”It is the political decision that is to be made at the initial stage of the military facilities deployment “, the defense ministry press service declared to the BelaPAN. Military officials are only executors”.
It is to be mentioned that the ambassador of the Russian Federation did not deny a might-be deployment of Russia’s new military facilities in Belarus in return to stationing the US antimissile system components in Europe. “That depends on the level of our political integration and on the viewpoints of experts, diplomats, military men: must, can, where and how”, Surikov said in his interview to the Interfax, adding that he meant” the facilities related to the nuclear weapons”, Surikov told the Interfax.
“I mean nuclear weapon-related facilities”, the diplomat added.
Later Surikov started rebutting his own words .He remarked that his viewpoint on development of military cooperation between Belarus and the Russian Federation declared a day before in one of his interviews “was completely misinterpreted. And some periodicals are quoting statements which I have never pronounced”, the Ambassador told.
Presently there are two military objects belonging to the Russian Federation- radiolocation station ”Volga” (Gantsevichi, Brest region ) and center of remote control of the Russian Navy (Vilieka, Minsk region).
As the commander of the space forces of Russia General Colonel Vladimir Popovkin declared 23 August Russia envisages turning down its radiolocation systems of missile attack warning stationed beyond its borders.
