Belarusian officials regret Russian nuclear weapons withdrawal
13:34, 31/08/2007

Despite of nuclear weapons withdrawal from its territory Belarus constantly feels pressure exerted at it, declared chairman of the commission on international affairs and national security of the “council of the republic” of the “national assembly” Mikalai Cherginets .

“Everything was withdrawn but for that the country got only the pressure”, Mikalai Cherginets said. According to him,” Belarus voluntarily withdrew nuclear weapons from its territory but didn’t receive a penny for that. The amount of weapon withdrawn from the country could have hit around 1.5.thousand strategic targets”.

He also added that “Belarus constantly feels pressure exerted at it as the country which stands for the idea of Slavic unity as well as the country demonstrating the idea of fraternity with Russia“.

The day before Ambassador of the Russian Federation did not exclude the might-be deployment of Russia’s new military facilities in Belarus in return to stationing the US antimissile system components in Europe. “That depends on the level of our political integration and on the viewpoints of experts, diplomats, military men: must, can, where and how”, Surikov said in his interview to the Interfax, adding that he meant “the facilities related to the nuclear weapons”. Surikov told the Interfax.

“I mean nuclear weapon-related facilities”, the diplomat added.
