UN General Assembly to take Kazulin’s destiny under its control
17:18, 17/09/2007

18 September the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly is to open in New York. Before the session the presidium of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Gramada) called the UN General Assembly for taking violation of human rights in Belarus, particularly criminal prosecution of leader of social democrats Alyaksandr Kazulin under the international control. That was reported by the deputy chairman of the BSDP Igar Rinkevich.

In its appeal of 17 September the presidium of the BSDP attracts the attention of representatives of the countries gathered for the UN General Assembly to the fact that”Professor Kazulin might have also been with them as several years ago he was proposed the position of the permanent representative of the Republic of Belarus to the UNO .But due to his free thinking A. Kazulin’s appointment to this post was not made. And after Professor Kazulin’s challenging the Belarusian governor in power by participating in the presidential election he was arrested at the demonstration of protest 25 March 2006”.

The BSDP leaders stress that 19 September is an anniversary of the verdict brought against their party’s chairman coming into force. They also mentioned that the independent legal appraisals of Kazulin’s case admitted it politically motivated. The BSDP remarked that Kazulin was admitted as the Prisoner of Conscience by international organizations and “by holding his 53 day-long hunger strike he achieved the issue of human rights violations in Belarus to be raised at the UN Security Council”.

It is mentioned in the appeal that”the national court instances have persistently refused to improve the rough violations of the law and Kazulin’s rights in the process of his case investigation and trial”. A. Kazilin’s lawyers are drafting the claim which is to be submitted in the near future to the UN Committee for Human Rights. For this reason the BSDP called the UNO structures, firstly, the Supreme Commissioner and Council for Human Rights, Working Group for Forced Disappearances to keep cases of disappearances in Belarus and politically motivated criminal cases under their control.

The BSDP also called the UN Committee for Human Rights for “paying special attention to consideration of the claim on violations of numerous articles of the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights in the process of Kazulin’s case investigation and trial”.
