Belarus should perform real amendments to the electoral process.

Senator Benjamin Cardin believes that the U.S. should not ease any existing sanctions, but reinstate those recently suspended, if Belarus does not implement democratization to the electoral process.

Referring to recent consultations with human rights activists, Senator Cardin wrote it in the letter to Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland, Radio Svaboda reports.

According to Cardin, Belarusian electoral process needs a fair and transparent vote count process; free and fair media coverage during election campaigns; the inclusion of representatives of all candidates in election commissions; full access of domestic and international observers to the voting process and count; an allowance for the registration of civil society organizations.

Benjamin Cardin serves as the junior United States Senator from Maryland. In 2006 he became the Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission. In 1989-2007 he served as Congressman in the House of Representatives.

It should be reminded that on October 30 the U.S. Ministry of Finance informed about limited sanctions suspension on a number of Belarusian enterprises. According to the decision of the U.S. Ministry of Finance, sanctions on Belarusian enterprises, such as Belneftekhim, Grodno Azot, "Lakokraska", Naftan and others are suspended.

Sanctions were imposed because of persecution of the democratic opposition after the presidential elections in 2010.
