The Slutsk uprising was an unsuccessful armed attempt to defend the independence Belarus in the region of the town of Slutsk in November and December 1920. Within a month, the Belarusian military detachments, formed mainly of local peasantry, resisted the offensive blow of Soviet troops. The armed defence of the independence of Belarus started in Slutsk district on November 14, 1920. On that day there started a congress, which elected the Council of Slutsk. The objectives of the Council were the organization of the civil administration, and the protection of the region. The congress adopted a resolution that proclaimed the power of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR) in Slutsk and its vicinity, and voiced protest against the Bolshevik occupation. The military operations took place from 27 November to 31 December 1920.

Since the 1980s the Belarusian society celebrates the anniversary of the Slutsk uprising, which is a significant event in the history of the struggle for the independence of Belarus, as the Day of Heroes.
