The Belarusian Foreign Ministry believes that the process of trade between the two countries is being scandalized by the Ukrainian side.

The press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Dzmitry Mironchyk stated that at briefing in Minsk on November 26, commenting on Kyiv’s decision to introduce special tax on a number of Belarusian goods, BelaPAN informs.

The day before the Ukrainian governmental newspaper Uriadovy Kurier published the information about Ukraine's decision to impose a duty on imports of a number of Belarusian goods at a rate of 39.2% since January 20, 2016. We are talking about supplies of milk and milk products, cheese, fish products, confectionery and bakery products, chocolate, beer, vodka, salt, cosmetics, shampoos, matches, kitchen furniture, tires, tractors and some other products. It was also reported that this decision was made in response to the Belarusian “discriminatory and hostile actions” against Ukrainian confectionary and brewing industries.

“The normal process of development of mutually acceptable and mutually beneficial terms of trade between the countries is being scandalized and transferred into the sphere of unprofessional public policy”, – Dzmitry Mironchyk said.

The spokesman of the Foreign Ministry said that in recent months the Ukrainian side “has stepped on the same rake not for the first time, loudly announcing restrictions against Belarusian products in response to the alleged discrimination against some of the goods on our part.”

“We never act like that. Suffice it to recall that because of the difficult internal situation Ukraine introduced a special charge on imported goods. Belarus was understanding of this decision of our Ukrainian neighbours, but in fact Kyiv has violated the international treaty on free trade“, – Mironchyk said.

According to him, the claims of the Ukrainian side relate to the necessity of sanitary-hygienic examination of goods.

Mironchyk noted that “there is no discrimination in the sanitary examination of Ukrainian products, this rule applies to all manufacturers from all the countries which are not the members of the Eurasian Economic Union.” “We monitor imported products, because there is an objective need to protect the health of our citizens,” – the spokesman said.

“At present, there are no grounds for review of the Belarusian government’s decision. We will convey the message about this position to our Ukrainian colleagues and try to find a solution to this issue through bilateral consultations,” – Mironchyk said.
