Uladzimir Niakliaeu: Russian military base may provoke spontaneous protests in Belarus

People have begun to understand the lack of prospects in the regime's policy.

Uladzimir Niakliaeu is charged with organising and participating in pickets in Minsk on September 10 and 23. The politician will stand trial on September 30. According to him, the Belarusian regime has faced an unexpected problem of setting up a Russian military base. It provoked an additional wave of protests in society, Uladzimir Niakliaeu said in an interview with Radio Svaboda.

“It can be seen in the reaction of independent media and also in the reaction of people. Together, it gives an opportunity for spontaneous protests against the fake elections and foreign military bases. And also against the policy of the authorities that led the country to its full dependence on Russia, though Lukashenka is now trying to become dependent on the West,” Niakliaeu says.

The politician notes that people have begun to understand the lack of prospects in the regime's policy. He thinks protests are highly probable.

“Protests may become bigger than the authorities expect. They need to prepare everything to isolate those able to call on people to take to streets. These trials and charges are a reason for the isolation,” Uladzimir Niakliaeu says.

He added that a rally against the Russian military base in Belarus would definitely take place on October 4.
