IAEA recommends Belarus should improve the emergency response system for the operation of the Belarusian NPP.

The IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) recommends that Belarus should pay attention to the improvement of the means of reaction to the possible occurrence of emergency situations during the operation of the NPP in Astravets.

“The mission would like to give a recommendation to strive to bring the regulative norms of the NPP exploitation into compliance with the IAEA norms. In particular, this concerns the ability to react to the emergency situations,” – head of the mission, Director-General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) Petteri Tiippana has told the journalists on Friday in Minsk, Interfax.by reports.

Tiippana has also pointed out that the suggestions and recommendations made by the IAEA mission concern realization of those problematic issues that were revealed by the Belarusian side during self-assessment.

The IRRS mission worked in Belarus on October 2-14.

The Belarusian NPP is being constructed in Astravets district of Hrodna region under the Russian project “VVER-1200”. It will consist of two power blocks with a 1200 MVt capacity each.
