Students Forced To Engage In Volunteer Donorship

Belarus plans to switch to the volunteer donorship by 2020.

The volunteer donorship movement is planned to be introduced in the Belarusian higher educational establishments, Director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Transfusiology and Medical Bio-Technologies Fiodar Karpenka has said during the session of the collegium of the Ministry of Education, dedicated to the ideological and educational work, BelTA reports.

“We want to start the volunteer donorship movement among the students of higher educational establishments, the way it was done in Russia and a number of other countries,” – he has said.

The Director of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center has expressed his hope for the assistance of Vice-Rectors on ideological and educational work, who supervise this activity. They will find the volunteers together and conduct an agitation campaign with participation of the blood transfusion organizations in each region. To start the program, they will design the logo and the motto. The schedule of the blood transfusion organizations’ visits will be agreed with the Ministry of Education.

Fiodar Karpenka has noted that the whole world is quitting the practice of paid donorship. Belarus plans to switch to the volunteer donorship by 2020.

In Belarus, absolutely healthy people over 18 (women – up to 55 years old, men – up to 60) can become donors. The average age on donors in the country is 30-50 years old.

There is a scientifically proven fact: for a healthy human, blood donation is adjuvant. One can donate blood every 2 months with no risk to the health, given the absence of contraindications. As for the blood plasma, this term makes every 2 weeks. Delivery of 450 ml and 600 ml of blood plasma has no harmful effects on the body of a healthy person, and does not affect their ability to work. Regular blood donation stimulates blood formation and, consequently, self-renewal of the body. Active donors’ organisms recover after the blood loss quicker.

Donors rarely suffer from colds, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Active donation prevents atherosclerosis, disorders of the liver and pancreas.
