Darafeyeva, Davydzka Visit Jail: Restaurant-Like Food, Good Conditions

Darafeyeva liked the soup, the stew and the dried fruit drink, while Davydzka praised the jail for the “business environment”.

Members of the civil committee at the Interior Ministry, including Head of the Belarusian TV and Radio Company Henadz Davydzka, Co-Chairperson of the Belarusian Union of Women Antanina Morava and Honoured Artist of Belarus Iryna Darafeyeva visited the pre-trial detention center and prison #4 in Mahiliou.

According to the Interior Ministry’s press-center, it was the idea of the committee members to see the convicts with their own eyes.

“The guests visited the canteen: the dinner was cabbage soup, a cutlet with rice and dried fruit drink. Besides, the cost of the three meals a day of the people in the pre-trial detention center for the state is Bn 10 rubles 50 kapeykas for one person per day,” — stated in the Interior Ministry’s report.

After the pre-trial detention center, the committee members visited prison #4. There are 10 men in one cell, books and tin mugs on the table. To the question of Head of the Belarusian TV and Radio Company Henadz Davydzka “Do you have any complaints?” the convicts answered in the negative, to the one “Do you get enough air here?” - in the positive.

The delegation proceeded to the women cells. “The convicts look great, they have plenty of time to look after themselves,” – stated in the report.

The guests were also offered to try the prison dinner – soup, stew with a pickle, dried fruit drink, and bread.

“The food was great, like in a restaurant, I confess I even tried a bit – very tasty,” — says Iryna Darafeyeva, the Honoured Artist of Belarus, now a member of the permanent commission of the “chamber of representatives” on education, culture and science.

Having summarized the opinions of his colleagues, Chairman of the civil council at the Interior Ministry Henadz Davydzka noted that “prison made an impression of an extremely business-like environment”.

“Such places should not cause positive emotions, but the conditions there are good, in terms of cleanness, discipline,” — Davydzka noted. — “The staff know their work, and the convicts know why they are there and why everything is so organized.”
