Siarhei Balykin: Belarusians Shuttle Traders Will Import Goods From Russia

People will lose the opportunity to buy cheaper goods at home due to the restrictions on the import of parcels.

New limits on goods purchased abroad are introduced in Belarus.

Soon Belarusians will be able to receive duty-free parcels for personal use from abroad in the amount of no more than 22 Euros per month and a maximum weight of 10 kilograms.

According to head of the Association of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Siarhei Balykin, it is difficult to say why the authorities have signed into power such a limitation, Radio Svaboda informs.

“Most likely, such restrictions have been imposed on Belarusians in order to deprive them of opportunity to buy cheap goods abroad and in doing so to support the Belarusian official trade. What will happen as the result? Most likely, these goods will be sent to Russia, Ukraine, and may be, Lithuania and Poland, and Belarusians will import these goods from there as shuttle traders. In the case of Russia, it doesn’t make any problems at all, because there is no customs border between Belarus and Russia. Such restrictions adversely affect competition on Belarusian market; Belarusian consumers lose the opportunity to buy cheaper goods. And Belarusian traders, players of the Belarusian market, lose the skill to work in a competitive environment”, - Siarhei Balykin says.
