Miachyslau Hryb: Date To Be Replaced With Change Of Power
MIACHYSLAU HRYB

Twenty-six years ago, on July 27, 1990, the Belarusian parliament – the Supreme Council of the 12th convocation – adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Byelorussian SSR.

On August 25, 1991, three days after the coup failed in Moscow, the Supreme Council of the 12th convocation granted the document the status of a constitutional law. On September 19, 1991, in connection with the renaming of the Byelorussian SSR in the Republic of Belarus the appropriate changes were made in the title and the text of the declaration. New national symbols were introduced: the white-red-white flag and the coat of arms “Pahonia.”

Commenting to BelaPAN on the Declaration’s adoption anniversary, deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the 12th convocation Miachyslau Hryb noted that “for two decades Belarusian authorities have not been attaching significant importance to national sovereignty, putting stress on integration with a neighboring country.”

“Though it has significantly changed its rhetoric lately, – Hryb added. – The power, perhaps even more often than the opposition, has started to use the words “independence” and “sovereignty.” Apparently, it can’t help the feeling that the real sovereignty and independence are threatened from the East.”

The former parliamentarian believes that at the same time it is necessary not only to talk but also to take concrete decisions to strengthen the independence. The government is taking very few steps in this direction. Hryb considers the shift of the Independence Day celebration to July 3 to be improper.

“The date will be replaced with the change of power, July 27 will take its rightful place in the calendar. Although it's not the main point when to celebrate the holiday – the most important thing is that sovereignty and independence were replete with the required content,” – the politician said.
