Mikalai Statkevich: Freedom Fighters in Belarus Need Solidarity

The leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (People's Hramada) takes part in the meeting of the Socialist International.

The People's Hramada is a party-member of the Socialist International - the global association of social democratic parties.

The regular meeting of the Council of the SI started on July 1, the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Mikalai Statkevich was proposed to report on the support of the struggle for democracy in not free countries.

The politician informed charter97.org that the report described the situation with the violation of human rights in Belarus in details and finally he said:

"Solidarity in the fight for freedom is needed not only to those who are fighting the dictatorships in their countries. It is required by those who show this solidarity.

When people in not free countries do not feel solidarity with their struggle for democracy, when they see how democratic leaders shake dictators' hands stained with blood, they lose faith in freedom. They lose hope for a decent life in their own country. Many residents of these countries are looking for opportunities to leave for free and wealthier countries. And they often bring with them their disappointment in democracy, the culture of non-freedom.

If politicians of democratic countries trample solidarity with those who struggle for democracy in non-free countries because of financial interests, then they bring discredit to ideals of freedom at their homes as well. No common ideals in the human society inevitably cause its destruction. The split of the Soviet Union after the collapse of the communist ideology is a good example. I consider Brexit another evidence of it.

Our world is one. And it takes the fight between freedom and non-freedom. If freedom suffers defeat in one country, then it makes non-freedom bolster its positions. The free territory in the world is getting smaller. Non-freedom is boosting its positions.

I'd like to finish with the slogan which more than 150 years ago was used by my neighbours and my compatriots in the fight against the tyranny: "For our and your freedom!"
