Anatol Liabedzka: European March is our victory

“It’s time for the Belarusian nation to begin a reconstruction of their neglected home along a European pattern. And the reconstruction has only been started today,” Anatol Liabedzka, the leader for the United Civil Party (UCP), told the press-service of Charter’97.

According to the politician, this is a victory of all Belarusians who want to live in a free country where European values are respected: “We didn’t give up to the authorities; we have cleared the route we have chosen - from Kalinouski Square to the Academy of Sciences where the meeting was held.”

At the same time the UCP leader emphasized that the European March wasn’t a one-day action; this is a complicated campaign of work with the society, including work on parliamentary election preparation. “We would have wasted time if we had just come together, talked a bit and left. Tomorrow we are to start a thorough work with common citizens. If it’s necessary, we will come to their homes, we will visit towns and villages to try to reach everyone. We will explain the requirements which were announced by the European Union to the Belarusian authorities, we will explain why the requirements must be met and what it can bring to the people. We will say why it’s better to live in a country where such European values as human rights and freedom of speech are respected. In case such a plan is implemented we will be able to say that today’s action was a real start for a big campaign,” Anatol Liabedzka said.
