Kaliakin thinks Belarus won’t join EU within 30 years

29 September the conference “Building European House Together” took place in Kiev. On the conference Werner Estmayer, German North Rhine-Westphalia Landtag Member said that Belarus has a possibility to become a member of the European Union on condition of the democratic society development. The “Zavtra Tvoyei Strany” correspondent has studied the opinions of the Belarusian politicians on the conditions under which Belarus can enter Europe.

-The German politician said good things, but unfortunately we must admit the reality, - Anatol Liabedzka, United Civil Party leader thinks. – The final word should the citizens of Belarus say, not the European deputies.

According to the politician, the first step towards Europe should be the realization of the European values in Belarus.

When there will be real parliament, independent court, market economy, when people will have the opportunity to choose, it will be a great success. Then we should think about the second step – the European standards, from cucumber length and sewer pipe diameter to ecology, quality of the authorities and so on. When this will be achieved then our delegation can arrive in Brussels and announce that we satisfy the Copenhagen Criteria that are necessary for joining the EU, - Anatol Liabedzka is sure.

--It is not real in the nearest future, - Siarhey Kaliakin, first secretary of the Party of Communists Belarusian Central Committee thinks. – The EU has formulated the perspectives of its further development. I would say that the enlargement stopped. The reasons are not external, the situation inside the EU has caused it. According to Kaliakin, the enlargement of the EU has led to a great number of problems – economic, social and others.

-- However it our eurooptimists may offend, I find fantastic the statements about Belarus’s joining the EU in the nearest 20-30 years. But it doesn’t mean we should prevent the realization of the European values, standards in political, economic and social spheres. We must strive for the best the EU has, but avoid the problems it has, - PKB leader says.

According to Siarhey Kaliakin, he wouldn’t follow today’s policy planning the near Belarus’s joining the EU. “We should try to be a good neighbour. We are not in the EU program “New neighbours”. Being a politician of the limited biological age, I don’t think I will be alive when we join the EU”, - the main oppositional communist summarizes.
