Scientists’ congress: authorities must speak Belarusian

Scientists ought to promote a law on fluent command of two state languages as a basic requirement for state service, director of Linguistics Institute n.a. Yakub Kolas of the National Academy of Sciences Aliaksandar Lukashaniets told delegates of the 1st congress of Belarusian scientists at the section on humanities and arts.

The scientist is convinced this measure will help Belarusian teachers shape bilingual individuals who comprehend the value of the country’s national and cultural priorities. “If students and their parents realize that a good command of the Belarusian language is needed for a good job, they will change completely their attitude towards its studies,” A.Lukashaniets emphasized. “At the same time the Belarusian society will get individuals who are perfectly trained for successful activity in the contemporary multilingual and multicultural world.”
