14:39, — Politics
The whole world is watching the electoral race in the United States. Ho will become the next US president ¬ – a democrat or a republican? How will the election results influence Belarus? “The situation in Belarus is abnormal in such degree, that democratic countries can’t have any divergence of views. There is a consensus between republicans and democrats,” Andrei Sannikov, international coordinator of Charter’97 and one of the initiators of the civil campaign “European Belarus,” is sure.
How the results of the US election will influence Belarus? Euroradio have discussed this issue with Andrei Sannikov, international coordinator of Charter’97.
– How the US election will influence Belarus?
– What concerns Belarus, there is a consensus between republicans and democrats. What concerns the very Belarusian situation, human rights, democracy support and democratic forces... Democrats and republicans cooperate well. By the way, Ms. Clinton met with our women, sent letters in support of women and democracy in Belarus via Charter’97. We have met with McCain. He recalls Belarus now, during his electoral campaign. That is why I think the situation in Belarus is abnormal in such degree that the democratic countries can’t have any divergence of views concerning this situation.
– Is McCain familiar with the situation in Belarus?
– I’d like to note he had several meetings with opposition leaders and other representatives of the democratic forces. It was at Riga NATO summit, at other forums, in Washington. He is conversant with such painful topic as the missing people.
– The democrats haven’t been in power for a long time. What are the chances the democrats will gain the power this time?
– One can’t say who has more chances. In my view, the current events demonstrate both democrats and republicans have equal chances. The candidates haven’t been determined yet.
Even concerning the republicans, I wouldn’t say McCain will be a candidate for sure. He is an unchallenged leader, but there may be different approaches of other candidates and inside the party. I think much will depend on what pairs will appear, who will be with McCain and who will go together with democrat’s candidate.
