Mikalay Statkevich: Regime tries to reduce Russia’s pressure

“Regime makes concessions, new “positive signals” to Europe, in order to reduce, counterbalance Russia’s pressure,” believes the former political prisoner, the leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic party “Narodnaya Hramada” Mikola Statkevich, commenting on the release of Artur Finkevich.

“I think that Putin’s visit in December last year was not as easy as it had been stated. Belarusian authorities turned out to be under a huge pressure from Russia, and they are being pressed in order to unite. In this situation the Belarusian regime is forced to look for an offset from the side of Europe. That is why they are making some concessions, resort to new “positive signals” in order to reduce, counterbalance Russia’s pressure,” the politician said in an interview to Radio Svaboda.
