Belarusian archives ordered not to give information about Polish roots

Officers of Hrodna public archives reject city dwellers to give data confirming person’s belonging to Polish minority. The official explanation is that there are no necessary documents.
Yet some months ago, Hrodna archives for some charge gave everyone interested a certificate saying if his or her ancestors lived on that territory and had Polish nationality before 1939, Radio Racyja reports.
But after a Card of Pole was imposed, officers of Hrodna public archives began to refuse to issue such certificates. City dwellers think by these actions the authorities hinder Belarusian citizens to receive a Card of Pole.
The only document, people of Polish parentage can receive in archives, is a certificate that he or she was christened in a catholic church before 1939. The service costs 17 dollars, but this data base doesn’t contain all people, because many of them were christened illegally in the Soviet times.
However, archive officers advise to refer to village councils and search for necessary information there.
