Charnobyl Way rally organisers have met today with representatives of the authorities in the Minsk city executive committee concerning the rally on 26 April, dedicated to anniversary of the accident on the Charnobyl nuclear plant.
Some of the applicants for Charnobyl Way Alyaksandr Vauchalin, Uladzimir Labkovich, Ihar Rynkevich, Aleh Shapavalau, and Yury Milishkevich have met in the Minsk city executive committee with deputy prosecutor of Minsk Alyaksei Stuk, deputy head of the Minsk city executive committee on ideology Henadz Kurbeka, deputy head of the Minsk city executive committee on security colonel Ivan Melnik.
As lawyer Ihar Rynkevich, who attended the meeting, has said to the Charter’97 press center, applicants for Charnobyl Way were read out a decision on the action. It was offered that participants of Charnobyl Way may gather near the Academy of Sciences from 2.00pm to 3.00pm. The rally is allowed along Independence Avenue, Surhanau Street to Park of People’s Friendship, where a meeting is to be held.
“The authorities offered a classical uncompromising variant of holding the action. They are likely not to have another idea. We wanted to discuss the route of Charnobyl Way, but they said us the decision was final and was signed by Mikhail Tsitsyankou, deputy head of the Minsk city executive committee,” Rynkevich said to the Charter’97 press center.
The Charter’97 press center asked Alyaksandr Milinkevich, leader of the “For Freedom” movement and head of the Charnobyl Way organising committee, to comment on the situation.
“The decision of the authorities is not surprising. They are obtrusively offering a route to Banhalor Square, though it is well known that pro-democratic people want to hold action in the Minsk center. The city belongs to everyone, and we have proved we can hold peaceful actions. The session of the organising committee is to take place today, and we will decide everything concerning holding of Charnobyl Way,” Alyaksandr Milinkevich said.
The democrats planned to start Charnobyl Way at 2.00pm 26 April near the Academy of Sciences and continue it with a rally to Independence Square, where a meeting was to be held.
