Vyachaslau Siuchyk got 15 days of arrest

Politician and public activist Vyachaslau Siuchyk got 15 days of administrative arrest. The district court of Starya Darohi (Minsk region) adopted this decision.
BelaPAN has learnt it from Anton Astapovich, head of the Republican Public Association “Belarusian Voluntary Society for Protection of Monuments of History and Culture.”
Siuchyk, heading the memorial department of the society, was detained near the Maskouski district court of Minsk by militia officers form Starya Darohi on 23 April. They guarded him to the Starya Darohi militia department and accused of violation the Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code (violation of organising and holding of a mass event or a picket).
After Siuchyk gave explanations in the militia department, he was guarded to the court.
The accusation is connected with setting up a memorial cross on 19 April in the Drazhno village (the Starya Darohi district) in the memory of the civilians slaughtered by partisans 15 April 1943. A six-pointed cross of St Euphrosyne of Polatsk, patroness of Belarus, set up near the catholic cemetery of the village, a part of which was burnt down, whose many inhabitants were killed or burnt in their houses by the partisans.
More than 30 people, including the village dwellers and eyewitnesses of the tragedy, took part in the ceremony of opening of the memorial. Before the setup of the cross, representatives of local authorities, among them officers of secret services, militia, ideological department of the Starya Darohi executive committee, came up. They tried to hinder the setting of the memorial. Nevertheless, the opening ceremony was held.
The information appeared on 23 April that the monument was removed.
