During the crackdown of the action of support of political prisoners, held on 14 July on October square in Minsk, riot militia officers beat up leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka.

“Riot militia began to force people out of the square. I asked why they didn’t allow the people to stay at the square with portraits. I asked riot militiamen to introduce themselves. In response they began to push and kick me. Then 5-6 men began to beat me, there was a strong blow at stomach, it went dark before my eyes, I was knocked down to the ground and kicked about five times. My son and other people run up to me. I can’t breathe normally for some minutes. Then I felt ache in chest when breathing in,” Anatol Lyabedzka told in an interview to the Charter’97 press center.

After the beating the politician went to hospital No. 2. Doctors found two hematomas on chest, abdominal area and legs.

“Everything was as usual. If the law enforcement bodies have been working for 14 years under the sane regime, one can’t expect they will change themselves or change their attitude towards the opponents of the authorities. They acted brutally. But the main thing for us was to express our solidarity with the people, who are in far more difficult conditions today than we are,” the UCP leader noted.
