Financial militia pressing upon one of BCD leaders

3

Relatives of Heorhy Dzmitruk, co-head of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party, suffer pressure from the authorities. His wife and mother-in-law were called to the Financial Investigation Department.

As the politician told the Charter’97 press center, officers of the Financial Investigation Department phoned his relatives and secretary Mikola Sauchuk said them to come to the department and show them documents on activity of the Christian Business Initiative association, headed by Heorhy Dzmitruk.

“Besides, I am a representative of the BCD party, and I am a head of the republican NGO Christian Business Initiative. Today my secretary had a telephone call from the Financial Investigation Department, and he was told to show them documents on our activity for the last two years. Though we have already had three checks. Our organization carries on humanitarian aid, it was checked even by the State Control Committee, and this agency is more powerful than the Financial Investigation department. We were checked by the department two times, they spoke with the people, who had received aid, and they found nothing. And now they are going to check us again!” Heorhy Dzmitruk says.

The Christian democrat stressed that this demand of the department contradicts Lukashenka’s decree on suspending of such audits.

“Alyaksandr Lukashenka sign a decree on December 19, if I am not mistaken, which suspends all audits of enterprises and organizations. So, I suppose that this is not an initiative of the Financial Investigation Department, they are rather good economists, they are searching in places, where they can find something. I am sure the KGB is involved in this case. It seems they have pressed the Financial Investigation Department,” Heorhy Dzmitruk said.

The politician thinks a real ground for the close attention to the Christian Business Initiative is his political activity.

“You know, the Belarusian Christian Democracy held a congress on Saturday, and I was elected co-chairman of the party. Today, on Friday, when even a week hasn’t passed and ink on the signed document is still wet, my relatives receive telephone calls and ordered to show documents! One of my relatives was even asked to show document for a boiler! Moreover, my wife and mother-in-law were summoned to the Financial Investigation Department. My wife is a member of the BCD party, but of course the reason of this pressure is my Christian and political position as a co-chairperson of the party,” Heorhy Dzmitruk believes.

It should be reminded that a founding congress of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party was held in the Palace of Culture of the Minsk Tractor Plant on February 28. Speaking at the congress, co-chairman of the party Heorhy Dzmitruk made some tough statements about the Belarusian authorities.
