Prosecutor’s office refused to comment on death of human rights activist

Prosecutor’s office of the Salihorsk district is conducting a check on the fact of suicide of human rights activist Yana Palyakova.

The results of check will be presented to her relatives, BelaPAN learnt from district prosecutor Viktar Belchyn. The date of the en d of the check hasn’t been defined.

The prosecutor’s office refused to give any comments on this issue, Interfax reports.

Yana Palyakova, sentenced to 2.5 years of restraint of liberty by the Court of Salihorsk, was found hanged in her house in Salihorsk on March 7.

The human rights activist was tried under part 2 of article 400 of the Criminal Code of Belarus – “false accusation”.

It should be reminded that persecution of Salihorsk human rights activist Yana Palyakova by law enforcement bodies evoked a wide public response in November. Yana Palyakova said she had been detained by militiamen several times for her opposition activity. it was also reported that the woman was beaten in a militia department and her arm was nearly broken. It should be added that Yana Palyakova was a member of the imitative group of Alyaksandr Kazulin’s daughter Volha at the “parliamentary elections” 2008.

The human rights activist will be buried in Salihorsk at 1.00 p.m. today.
