Belarusian Viking won Eurovision (Video)

Belarus born Alexander Rybak from Norway became winner of the 54th Eurovision Song Contest. Most European countries, among them Belarus, gave the highest mark to the musician.

Our countryman scored record 387 points beating previous record by Finnish band Lordi (292) in 2006. According to the Eurovision rules the next contest will be organized in Norway.

Norway received the maximum number of points –12 – from Spain, Belarus, Sweden, Israel, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, the Netherlands, Estonia, Denmark, Slovenia, and Hungary.

Victory of Alexander Rybak became obvious during the official voting, when Norway received almost two times more points than Azerbaijan and Iceland, the nearest rivals.

The Norwegian musician was called a favourite of 2009 Eurovision by betting offices.

The song, given victory to Rybak at the song contest in Moscow, was composed by occasion, as the singer says: the beloved musician began to play a melody recalling his beloved. That is how Fairytail was born.

Alexander Rybak was born in Minsk to a family of musicians on May 13, 1986. When he was five, his parents moved to Oslo suburb and has never visited his native country since than. He played with popular group A-Ha and famous violin-player Pinchas Zukerman.

After announcing the results of Eurovision contest, a press conference was held where all questions were addressed to the Norwegian winner. Answering a question if his Belarusian roots had helped him to win, Alexander Rybak told:

“Yes. It helped me that I was born in Belarus. Thank you< Belarus, I am so happy. In Belarus, in Russia they like nostalgia and melancholy. In Norway we're the happiest people in the world. The mix of them brought this interesting result,” the musician thinks.
