Belarusian PEN Centre and “Nasha Niva” editorial office searched

6

On December 28 at about 6.50 p.m. the unknown started to pound at the door of the Belarusian PEN Centre.

A journalist of “Nasha Niva” newspaper Zmitser Pankavets refused to open the door. Then the attackers cut off electricity.

The search in the PEN Centre poses a threat of paralyzing the work of “Nasha Niva”, as part of its journalists work in the premises of the PEN Centre.

Andrei Skurko, the editor-in-chief of “Nasha Niva” and a deputy chair of the PEN Centre, arrived to the scene.

As it had been informed, earlier KGB staffers held searches in a number of head offices of parties, associations and mass media.

It should be noted that Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu was the head of the Belarusian PEN Centre once. It was in 2008. During the searches in May 2010 the office of the Belarusian PAN was not visited.
